Wedding Trends of 2022

So, I am sure we are all aware, 2022 is the year of weddings! With more than 470,000 weddings expected to take place this year, and as many as 800,000 over the next few years, its big business.

But what should you be doing if you are planning a wedding this year? What are the on trend colours, themes and even food? Well, I have done a little research and I have decided to share with you my findings!

-These are trends and are not intended to offend.

What's In?

1. Neutral Colour Palettes

Everyone has been loving the sage green an gold colour scheme over the past few years, but now it's time for the earthy tones to shine. There are a lot of rich browns, soft creams and even burnt orange this year with it set to continue to 2023. With the rise in popularity of the pampas grass and natural furniture in our homes, warm beige and other hues from the coffee cup range are very much on trend. Many are opting for dried floral bouquets which add to the neutral colour themes, and with them already preserved, they can be kept for a long time after the wedding has been and gone.

2. Sustainable Weddings

This one has been trending for a few years and doesn't look like its about to stop! Did you know that the average UK wedding produces 18kg of single use plastic waste? Crazy right! The biggest offenders are disposable decorations, fake confetti and the inexplicable amount of plastic gifts that seem to circulate every hen-do! There are some easy ways to make your wedding more sustainable such as going digital with your wedding invites and follow-up information. Hiring decor and crockery that will be used again and again. Although the 'Bridesmaid' robes are are lovely, these could be personalised with their initials so its a gift that can keep on giving, rather than sit in the bottom of a cupboard.

3. Unique Entertainment

More and more, people want their day to stand out from the rest and provide a unique memory that will be talked about for years. There are all sorts of entertainment options for any wedding but there has been a big rise in the 'something different' category. Fire performers, contortionists and caricaturists are all big impact acts, but also hiring a fair ground, petting zoo or glitter bar can be a great way to leave a lasting impact in your guests!

4. Children Accommodated

There is no longer a rule book for the order of life! In years gone past in was unheard of to have children out of wedlock and the idea of being unmarried at 30 was laughable. But in todays modern world, we are all doing things in an order that suits us. This means that when it comes to your wedding day, you may already have children, or your friends are growing their own little families. This then calls into question the topic of child-free weddings. Now as a parent myself, I love any excuse to have night off from parenting and a wedding is a perfect reason for this. But, what if the childcare lets you down? Or the babysitter can't stay later than 8pm? Or the wedding is in a different part of the country and your still breast-feeding? All of these things could result in guests declining the invitation, or becoming a last minute drop out! Wedding creche and nannying services are predicted to boom in popularity over the coming years. This allows parents to leave their kids with a certified profession whilst being able to let their hair down. Also, kids in wedding pics are just the cutest!!

What's Out?

1. Photobooths

Photobooths were a huge trend in the 2010's, you couldn't go to wedding and not see one! But now, they are becoming a little outdated and other fun memories are being created. A lot of people are opting for the polaroid guest book, whereby you leave an instax camera for you guests to take their own photos. Another great guestbook idea is the audio guestbook which is a fun way for your guests to leave you a voicemail at your wedding. Along the same lines of retro themes, a hired typewriter for your guests to write their own message on is an amazing way to keep those beautiful well wishes. But, If you still love the idea of a photobooth, you can upgrade this option to a photo mirror or even a 360 video booth.

2. Wedding Favours

This for me is well overdue! Wedding favours are one of the traditions that I think are extremely unnecessary and extremely expensive or time-consuming. It is well known that a lot of these get left behind at weddings, and if they have personalisation of the happy Mr&Mrs on it, I hate to tell you, but your guests wont want it! The reality is, you are the one that will have to collect them all up at the end of the night and have them back at your house, probably feeling some kind of way that so many guests didn't want them. In my opinion, you would be better off spending that money on a welcome drink for your guests or even buying a few boxes for your attendees to take some of your wedding cake home in!

3. Micro-Weddings

Micro-weddings were a big hit in the immediate aftermath of the pandemic, but now that life is pretty much back to normal, people want to make up for lost time and really let their hair down. The bigger the better mentality is most certainly back!

4. Buffet Style Food

Burger bars and pizza vans were a huge hit with guests when it was a novelty, but now it is becoming the norm, most are wanting to go back to the three-course sit down meal. It has become apparent that when you provide this sort of dining experience, it is extremely hard for those of your guests who maybe have allergies, intolerances or other dietary requirements to really be able to select their food confidently. Most guests want you to let the venue know of their food conditions as that way they can be sure of no cross-contamination. - Evening reception food is exempt from this, of course!
